Bernie Ecclestone has called for Max Verstappen to join Ferrari, insisting the Dutch driver’s move could spark a new championship chase.
The former Formula 1 chief, 95 years old and fresh from a decade‑long absence after the 2017 sale of the sport to Liberty Media, spoke on Saturday at the Austrian Grand Prix paddock. He revealed that if he still ran a team “the first thing I’d like to do is bring Max onboard at whatever cost,” arguing the move would be cheaper than improving a current car.
When prompted about the most suitable destination for Verstappen, Ecclestone said he would have pushed the driver to Ferrari before the 2025 season. He added that the option would allow Verstappen to showcase his skill against a recognised factory outfit, whereas staying at Red Bull could stall his growth.
Ecclestone’s remarks extended to former Red Bull boss Christian Horner, whom he also suggested could benefit from a Ferrari switch. “Christian is in a difficult position anyway,” Ecclestone explained. “Wherever he goes, if he doesn’t succeed people will say… “ah Christian you were very good when you were with Red Bull, now you’re not winning because of that.” He admitted there was no certainty where Horner might land.
Both figures, both rooted in the high‑stakes world of Formula 1, see the Ferraris bid as an avenue to minimise risk for their teams and maximise competitive potential for their key drivers.
