Former Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer warned that Kimi Antonelli must develop the ability to drive a damaged car if he hopes to challenge for a title, citing the example of Michael Schumacher.
Szafnauer’s Compromised‑Car Challenge
During an episode of the High Performance Racing podcast, Szafnauer noted that senior drivers such as Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have effectively returned damaged machinery to the finish line. He described Schumacher’s skill in “bringing the car home” even in the early part of a race, pointing out that Antonelli’s future progression will depend on mastering that technique.
Silverstone Test on the 19‑Year‑Old
Antonelli’s last outing saw him stranded 15th after a bruising British Grand Prix. A dislodged wheel shield and a steering problem forced the driver to use only one gear at times, and a track‑limits penalty added to the challenge. Despite these setbacks, he avoided retirement and secured the maximum points possible.

The 10th round of the 2026 season will unfold at Spa‑Francorchamps from 17 to 19 July. Antonelli will have the chance to translate lessons from Silverstone into a more competitive drive, as he prepares to face the field again.
