Kimi Antonelli will line up third on the grid for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort after losing pole by a razor‑thin margin of 0.133 seconds to McLaren’s Lando Norris.
Qualifying stumble at Turn 1
During the final stage of Q3, the Mercedes rookie noted he “had a shot for pole” but faltered at the Turn 1 hairpin when rain began to fall. “I lost two tenths in the first sector, so that’s a shame,” Antonelli said.
He admitted backing off too much, describing feeling “lost… especially with the rear” and “struggling to find the right feel.” The car’s aerodynamic settings were not tweaked during the session, limiting available downforce.
Antonelli’s error left the net 19‑year‑old 0.031 seconds behind teammate George Russell, who secured second place, and 0.133 seconds behind Norris.
Weekend setbacks and championship ramifications
The Italian’s problems began on Friday when an off at the penultimate corner of sprint qualifying inflicted 25 points of downforce loss on the floor. That compromised lap times earned him a fifth‑grid start in Saturday’s race, where he finished fourth behind Russell, Charles Leclerc and Norris.
“I did a mistake and that definitely took some confidence away,” Antonelli reflected. “And also today in qualifying … I still struggled to find my rhythm and to put the lap times together.”
Entering Sunday, Antonelli’s 53‑point lead over Lewis Hamilton remains intact. “The mindset is the same: on the attack, but using my head,” he added, hinting that strategy will be crucial.
Strategic outlook for Sunday
Antonelli stressed the importance of a strong launch, then maintaining pressure on those in front. “Tyre management during the stint will also be important,” he said, adding that a different strategy might yield a better result.
He expressed confidence, stating, “We have a good chance to get a good result … I definitely don’t want to drive a defensive race.”
With the championship claiming a clear three‑point advantage, the focus now shifts to pushing faster while securing a finish that extends the leaderboard.
