KTM and its Tech3 satellite team are delaying the announcement of their 2027 rider lineup after Maverick Vinales voiced concerns about his contract status.
Vinales Holds the Line‑Up in Limbo
The 31‑year‑old rider expressed frustration that KTM had yet to confirm whether he would remain with Tech3 for the MotoGP rules reset. A clause in his current contract bars him from signing elsewhere until the end of the month, leaving a potential gap should KTM decide not to extend his contract.
Management Replies With Patience
During the Czech Grand Prix broadcast, KTM Motorsport Director Pit Beirer acknowledged Vinales’ feelings but emphasized the need to evaluate the rider’s recovery from a shoulder surgery performed three months after the July German GP crash. “We need to create the best possible package,” Beirer said, adding that a return to full fitness remains the priority.
Team boss Guenther Steiner echoed the sentiment, noting that the severe shoulder issue and Vinales’ recent performance fluctuations necessitate further time. Steiner clarified that while the contract is held by KTM, the decision about the 2027 seat involves both the factory and the Tech3 management.
Competing Riders and Future Prospects
Vinales’ potential competition includes current factory rider Brad Binder and several Moto2 talent linked for the second seat, which is earmarked for a rookie. Earlier this year, KTM had promised Vinales a promotion to the factory squad to replace Pedro Acosta, who is moving to Ducati; however, injuries led the team to sign Fabio di Giannantonio to partner the incoming Alex Marquez, reshuffling Vinales’ status back to Tech3.
All four current KTM riders are directly signed by the factory, reflecting the close collaboration between the manufacturer and the satellite outfit. Steiner emphasized that the decision set for 2027 hinges on a combined approach, balancing immediate performance with long‑term potential.
