Kyle Kirkwood’s Markham crash ‘flipped a switch’ before Freedom 250 win

Kyle Kirkwood: Markham crash “flipped a switch” before Freedom 250 win

Kyle Kirkwood took the lead on the opening lap and slashed the field to win the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C., earning his third IndyCar victory after rebounding from last week’s crash.

Immediate Recovery after Markham Misfortune

Kirkwood, a 27‑year‑old Florida native driving the #27 Andretti Global Honda, described the shift that began when his Markham outing ended in a costly crash. “Those mistakes feel terrible,” he said. “I hadn’t had one of those in a very long time.”

He channeled the frustration into “a relentless week of preparation,” re‑earning the focus that propelled him forward at the temporary 1.7‑mile, 7‑turn streets surrounding the National Mall.

Dominance on an 8‑Sector Circuit

Starting second, Kirkwood seized the front on lap one, dramatically overtaking title defender Alex Palou, the pole‑holder. He then led 128 of 147 laps, setting the pace through every corner and interpreting the circuit’s tight turns with precision.

The victory cost Palou a large fraction of his points cushion. The 133‑point lead shrank to 91 after the 20th‑place finish in a crash on lap 123 that stemmed from a damaged toe link.

Key Moment at Lap 129

During the final restart, Kirkwood was the sole driver among the top six on prime tires. Scott McLaughlin, on softer alternate rubber, launched an aggressive dive‑bomb into Turn 1.

Kirkwood evaded the moving wall, “yielding the corner just enough to avoid contact” after spotting McLaughlin in his mirrors. The incident called for a yellow‑flag restart that could have jeopardised Kirkwood’s advantage.

Mindset and Focus Under Pressure

“Once I saw how fast he was, I knew I had to give up position and hope to pass him at the exit,” Kirkwood reflected. He maintained a “four‑and‑a‑half‑second lead” and allowed himself to relax on the final lap, recognizing that a lapse in focus could prove costly.

Speaking after the race, he emphasized the adrenaline: “Seeing 100,000 fans on both days, the pace laps around the track—super cool to see.”

A Career‑Defining Win

For Kirkwood, this triumph aligns with his first IndyCar victory and solidifies his ascent. “Getting your first win in IndyCar is a very special moment,” he remarked. “This one toppling the first win for me.”

With the championship in flux and Palou’s lead eroded, the Freedom 250 win fortifies Kirkwood’s standing and sets the tone for the remainder of the season.
