Marco Bezzecchi defends pole after Marquez overtakes him again in Misano sprint.

Marco Bezzecchi defends start after Marc Marquez passes him again in Misano sprint

Marco Bezzecchi, after setting a new Misano lap record, could not hold off Marc Marquez’s sudden overtake into Turn 1 in the San Marino Grand Prix sprint.

Record Pole, No Title

Bezzecchi’s Aprilia pushed the edge of the circuit to stake pole for Saturday’s half‑distance race. Yet the Ducati rider’s lead collapsed within a single lap when Marquez transitioned past him under braking.

Tyre Choices and Early Pace

While the majority of the grid, including title rivals Marquez and Jorge Martin, opted for Michelin medium rear tyres, Bezzecchi selected the softer compound in hopes of a stronger launch. The theoretical advantage vanished as the 27‑year‑old struggled to match Marquez’s performance in the opening five laps.

  • Bezzecchi – Michelin Soft rear tyre (mid‑field strategy)
  • Marquez – Michelin Medium rear tyre
  • Martin – Michelin Medium rear tyre

Between laps five and eight, Bezzecchi trimmed the gap to 0.6 s before Marquez regained a full‑second advantage.

Launch and Line: Tactical Decisions

In Aragon, Marquez repeated a similar late‑grid manoeuvre, taking Turn 1 after Bezzecchi’s tighter line and Ducati’s open ride‑height device. Throughout that sprint, the Spaniard began from the second position but was agile enough that the Italian could not maintain the advantage.

Bezzecchi admitted his line was conservative; “He was a little bit better with the launch from second. I braked strongly and closed the line, but he was just a beat ahead,” he said.

Stability Issues and a Full‑Fuel Battle

During the three practices, Bezzecchi felt progressively more stable, yet the sprint began with a full fuel load, “creating a struggle for the first few laps.” He described the rear pushing against the front and a drive‑line that was less responsive than during qualifying or the session’s final practice.

Once confidence grew, the rider accelerated, “was very happy to reach a good pace,” and highlighted that the same early‑lap problem had surfaced in recent Grands Prix.

Championship Outlook

Post‑sprint standings place Jorge Martin 14 points ahead of Marquez, with Bezzecchi an additional eight points down in third. The unresolved battle at Misano offers a tantalising teaser for the remainder of the season.
