Sky Sports Formula 1 analyst Martin Brundle has declared that 19‑year‑old Kimi Antonelli is now the benchmark for the 2026 championship after a sprint‑race win over Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone.
Antonelli leads the 2026 charge
Antonelli’s victory marked the first time the newly‑signed Mercedes rookie captured a European sprint on home soil, swinging him to the top of the standings with 179 points while George Russell sits close behind at 136.
In his second season, the Italian driver has claimed wins in China, Japan, Miami, Canada, Monaco and now Silverstone, making him the youngest champion‑class contender to headline the season.
Mercedes sits 315 points ahead of Ferrari’s 215, with McLaren trailing at 167 in the constructors count.
Race‑day performance and Brundle’s praise
Antonelli qualified second, seized the lead early in the sprint, and held it until the final lap, demonstrating “maturity beyond his years,” Brundle noted during the UK Grand Prix coverage.
“He’s a little wild at times—seen in Austria last lap—but he settles down with remarkable pace later in a stint,” Brundle added.
Former W Series champion Naomi Schiff echoed the sentiment, saying the young driver “doesn’t lack raw speed; the challenge is to rein him in and curb mistakes.”
Championship dynamics
With 179 points, Antonelli sits 43 ahead of Russell, whose 136 puts him firmly in second place, while Hamilton trails at 132.
Mercedes’ dominance in the constructors’ race is clear, ensuring that Antonelli’s individual surge will push the team’s total forward.
The season has shifted its competitive centre to the German‑Swiss high‑tech outfit, with Antonelli’s form making him the focus of every pit‑lane conversation.
