The Jotun Invasion is the latest pillar of strategy in Valheim’s Deep North expansion, activated by destroying the Malicious Ice in the Morkhalla dungeon.
Triggering the Jotun Invasion
Unlike other spontaneous encounters in the game, the Jotun Invasion starts only after players complete the core objective in the Morkhalla dungeon: locating and destroying the central Malicious Ice. To reach this sanctuary, an Intricate Key is mandatory, constructed from its mould obtained by killing Elaking creatures, and processed in a Frost Foundry.
Once the key is forged, it opens the portal to Morkhalla. Inside, the Malicious Ice sits at the heart of the cavern and, when destroyed, triggers a splash of Jotun forces that emerge at a random location on the world map. While the invasion can happen anywhere, initiating it requires the Deep North biome’s dungeon.
Preparing for the Invasion
After the Malicious Ice vanishes, the game places a marker on the map indicating the invasion site. The event can run simultaneously up to three times; therefore, players should deal with one before initiating another to keep the world from becoming overrun.
Navigating the Invasion Zones
Travel to the marked location promptly. You will encounter a towering ice formation erupting from the ground, surrounded by hostile entities known as Hexens and Krigen—creatures that normally appear only within Morkhalla.
The Malicious Ice functions as an automated spawn point; each defeat of a Hexen or Krigen propels a new one from the ice, enabling prolonged combat sessions. Players can capitalize on this mechanic to farm high‑value drops before the invasion concludes.
Ending the Invasion
Combat the adversaries until the ice, which remains in the place of the destroyed Malicious Ice, collapses. The collapse stops further summoning and signals the end of the event.
Harvesting Malicious Blood
Successful completion rewards players with Malicious Blood, a critical component for summoning the game’s final boss, Kall Fimbulbringer. A single + two more are required for the full‑scale ritual.
Additionally, the consistent spawning of Hexens and Krigen supplies valuable materials, offering a reliable source of resources that is otherwise limited to the otherwise unforgiving Morkhalla environment. Strategic placement of a base near future invasion sites can streamline repeated farming cycles.
Why the Event Matters
Beyond the boss material, the Jotun Invasion introduces the most robust scaling challenge in Valheim, separating exploration from conquest. Its predictable trigger mechanism ensures that players can approach the encounter with a tactical plan, rather than playing through random influxes as with other in‑game events.
Handling a limited number of simultaneous invasions sharpens resource allocation, while the high‑yield material drops provide an incentive to compact multiple ingress points near a player’s stronghold.
With three stages of Malicious Blood safeguarded and enriched mining opportunities, the Jotun Invasion reframes the Deep North gameplay paradigm, combining procedural surprise with controlled gameplay progression.
