Max Verstappen Jokes About F1 Jungle After Dodging Airplane Shunt at Spa

Max Verstappen jokes about F1’s "jungle" after avoiding an "airplane shunt" at Spa

Verstappen Secures Podium at Spa

Max Verstappen finished second in the Belgian Grand Prix, overturning the Red Bull team’s expectation of a difficult weekend on an energy‑constrained circuit.

After a strong start on Friday and front‑row qualification on Saturday, the Dutchman slipped through the field to finish just behind Charles Leclerc.

Verstappen admitted that a slipstream from teammate Isack Hadjar offset 0.3 seconds; without it, he would have finished further back.

Race Dynamics on Kemmel and Eau Rouge

Early laps exposed Verstappen’s vulnerability on the Kemmel Straight. He described Leclerc’s closing speed as “a red rocket,” noting the “incredible speed differences” that forced him to hold line to avoid an airplane shunt.

“I expected Leclerc to come close,” Verstappen said, “but his pace on Kemmel was astonishing.”

A brief surge on the run to Eau Rouge proved less advantageous. Verstappen later explained it was too much deployment from Turn 1 to 2, and battery status after the turn revealed the subsequent run to Les Combes would be more challenging.

Toto Wolff noted that most Mercedes‑powered cars suffered from insufficient battery energy on the Kemmel Straight, while drivers highlighted issues with the power unit’s “self‑learning” feature.

Verstappen shrugged: “Welcome to F1 2026. Sometimes it can be a jungle.”

Season Insights and Tyre Strategy

Virtual safety car periods at inopportune moments came to the Dutchman’s disadvantage, having already pitted. Yet he regarded the podium as a solid result for a “straightforward” weekend, citing a healthy car window but unlucky VSC timing.

He added, “I could have fought Leclerc, but the second stint was disappointing. Hard tyres never gave me the same confidence as mediums.”

Despite the setbacks, a podium finish at Spa was seen as a positive outcome in a race that began with high expectations and delivered complex strategy battles.
