McLaren’s Lando Norris Loses Madrid F1 Win to Impossible Overtake

Lando Norris lost Madring F1 win because of impossible overtaking – McLaren

McLaren principal Andrea Stella blamed Madrid’s razor‑thin street circuit for Lando Norris’s inability to sustain his early lead over Max Verstappen.

Rapid Ascendancy Turned Sad

Norris earned pole and, within the first twelve laps, was six seconds in front of the field. The advantage eroded when a virtual safety car slowed the event and forced a pit stop that delivered a seven‑second tyres change.

Gaps Close, Opportunities Remain

Post‑stop, Norris trailed Kimi Antonelli by 16 seconds. By lap 48 the gap to both Antonelli and Verstappen narrowed, yet the impossible made a pass unlikely.

Slow Stop Not the Culprit, Says Stella

“Because probably Lando would have [come out] anyhow behind George Russell,” Stella explained, noting that even a faster stop would not have smoothed an overtaking manoeuvre. “And even if not, it would have not been possible to overtake Verstappen and Antonelli.”

Madrid’s Layout Struggles Overtaking Numbers

The Spanish Grand Prix featured only ten overtakes – the fewest of the 2026 season so far, and even lower than Monaco’s eleven. Turn 5, the circuit’s major braking zone, follows a sharp curve and is too narrow to allow side‑by‑side racing. “It just requires a large lap‑time difference,” Stella said. “We may need to review potential track modifications to introduce a realistic overtaking opportunity.”

In Practice: Why Turn 5 Is a Dead‑End

Although the preceding straight offers enough speed, the geometry of Turn 5 prevents two cars from entering together. The result is that overtaking there is essentially impossible, a fact that could have enabled Norris to reclaim the lead if strategy or track changes had permitted it.

While macroscale strategy will still evolve, the immediate lesson is clear: the Madrid track limits the field’s competitive dynamism, and without circuit changes, even the fastest cars may find themselves stymied by the layout. The question now is whether the FIA will act to make the Spanish circuit more conducive to the on‑track battles that fans and teams crave.
