Mercedes has confirmed the exit of former Junior Driver Programme boss Gwen Lagrue as he prepares to join Red Bull in a comparable role.

In a farewell posted on Monday, Mercedes thanked Lagrue for shaping drivers such as George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, and for building the team’s successor to its original junior engine.
Under Lagrue’s oversight, the Academy delivered Esteban Ocon and Russell into F1, while Kimi Antonelli was spotted karting at eleven, fast‑tracked through single‑seaters, and debuted in the top cat at eighteen, dominating the season’s second year.
Lagrue noted that Antonelli’s early karting talent “differed from other kids,” but his rapid adaptation once testing began marked him as exceptional.
Red Bull’s Upcoming Role
Red Bull is poised to fill the vacancy left by Helmut Marko’s retirement, with Lagrue set to oversee their own junior pipeline.
