Sky Sports commentator David Croft dismissed speculation that George Russell might leave Mercedes after a disappointing weekend at Spa‑Francorchamps.
Spurious Spa results and Antonelli’s triumph
Russell’s race was halted by an electrical power‑deployment fault at the start and a collision with former teammate Lewis Hamilton, a seven‑time champion. At the same event, Kimi Antonelli took his sixth victory of the season, putting the Italian 45 points ahead of Hamilton and 50 points ahead of Russell in the championship.

Confidence in Russell’s resilience
In the Sky Sports F1 Show, Croft confirmed Russell has never hinted at leaving Mercedes and that the driver seeks the best package to contest the world championship. He noted that the driver’s mindset will dictate his future form.
Croft highlighted Antonelli’s resurgence after the summer break: fourth in Baku, fifth in Singapore, sixth in Mexico, a podium in Brazil, another podium in Las Vegas, and fifth in Qatar. From a 16th‑place finish off the pitlane at Spa last year, Antonelli’s comeback demonstrates that talent and determination can reverse a tough season.
With Mercedes still working on power and chassis improvements, Russell’s position at the Brackley outfit appears secure – the latest commentary suggests that the Spa outcome will not prompt a departure.
