Mercedes Staunchly Defends Rejecting FIA’s Crucial Driver Aid Move

Mercedes defends its decision to reject crucial FIA driver aid

Mercedes chose to reject the FIA‑funded driver cooling vests, prioritising on‑track speed over cockpit relief in the Southeast Asian double‑header.

Cost‑cap pressures shape strategy

Deputy team principal Bradley Lord explained that the limited monetary allowance was deemed insufficient to produce a vest robust enough for a full race distance. He added that the team’s engineering focus had to stay on aerodynamics and mechanical upgrades.

According to Lord, both George Russell and Lewis Hamilton had endured higher temperatures a few seasons ago, but the current cars already reach better internal cooling. “The drivers backed the decision,” he said, citing their willingness to endure uncomfortable spots for improved lap times.

Comfort sacrificed, results impaired

Russell’s race ended prematurely due to a power‑unit failure, a loss that may invite an engine penalty for the upcoming Abu Dhabi finale. Lord noted that the setback “poses a real threat to the remainder of the 2026 season.” He referred to a potential “double‑whammy” effect, underscoring the stakes after Russell’s gut‑wrenching retirement.

The engine loss also triggers grid drops, adding another layer of adversity for the team as they navigate the calendar’s climax.

Reliability over relief

Mercedes stresses that elite competition favours lap‑time over driver comfort, a philosophy “that will always prevail for every racer in the pitlane.” The decision to skip the cooling vest program illustrates the hard trade‑offs teams impose under the FIA cost‑cap.
