Microsoft could hand a future Halo project to Activision.
Microsoft Eyes Activision for New Halo Venture
The Xbox insider Rebs Gaming disclosed that Xbox leadership is exploring a partnership with Activision to spearhead the next Halo title. According to the source, the proposal includes a collaborative framework between Microsoft, Activision publisher, and Sledgehammer Games.
Sledgehammer Games Set to Craft Multiplayer Segment
Rebs Gaming relayed that Sledgehammer Games, the studio behind Call of Duty: Vanguard, might be tasked with delivering a new multiplayer experience for Halo. The team’s prior work on multiplayer design positions them as a suitable fit for the franchise’s competitive aspects.
Previous Halo Prototype Cancelled Mid‑Development
Branching from the same pool of talent, Activision produced a basic Halo prototype in June as part of its pitch to Xbox. However, the project was discontinued in early July because it exhibited only rudimentary gameplay mechanics before it could pass the early blockout stage.
Outsourcing Trend Continues Post Campaign Evolved
Microsoft’s decision to outsource parts of Halo: Campaign Evolved to studios such as Ninja Theory, Virtuous, Turn 10 Studios, and Rare has defined the studio’s recent approach. After the remake’s launch, Halo Studios announced employee lay‑offs linked to underwhelming sales. The mixed critical reception further incentivizes the search for an external developer capable of revitalizing the series.
Balancing Double Duty: Activision’s Dual Franchises
A key consideration for Xbox is whether Activision can concurrently manage Halo and its flagship Call of Duty line. The publisher’s recent $69 billion acquisition of Microsoft’s gaming division already positions it as a central partner, but the practicalities of developing two flagship FPS brands remain in question.
