Minecraft Sulfur Caves Guide: Location, Blocks, and Mobs

The Chaos Cubed update adds a brand‑new underground biome, Sulfur Caves, to Minecraft’s world generation.

What defines the Sulfur Caves biome?

Set apart by vivid yellow sulfur and deep‑red cinnabar formations, the biome mimics real‑world geothermal springs where toxic vapors seep from mineral‑rich pools. Contact with these sulfur‑laden waters inflicts the Nausea effect, warping the player’s vision.

Towering pillars of sulfur and cinnabar can span the full height of the cavern, while the exclusive Sulfur Cube mob roams the area, capable of assimilating surrounding blocks to gain distinct behavioural traits.

Locating Sulfur Caves without a map

Three practical methods guide players to the hidden network:

  • Surface sulfur springs: Spotting bubbling yellow pools on the Overworld surface—ranging from tiny to extra‑large—offers a reliable surface marker. Digging directly beneath these springs typically leads to a Sulfur Cave.
  • Conventional mining: While exploring standard caves, keep an eye out for sulfur or cinnabar blocks; their presence signals entry into the new biome. Patience pays off, as the caves generate similarly to Lush and Dripstone caves.
  • In‑game commands: Typing /locate biome minecraft:sulfur_caves returns precise coordinates, which can be reached on foot or via /tp for instant travel.

New building materials

The biome introduces a suite of decorative blocks that expand architectural options:

  • Sulfur block family: Includes standard blocks, stairs, slabs, walls, polished variants, chiseled forms, and bricks, each with matching decorative pieces.
  • Potent Sulfur: Found only beneath sulfur springs, this lighter‑textured block releases a lingering gas cloud that imposes Nausea on any entity entering the water above.
  • Cinnabar block family: Mirrors the sulfur set in colour and form, offering stairs, slabs, walls, polished, chiseled, and brick versions in a volcanic red hue.

Sulfur Cube mechanics

Visually reminiscent of slime and magma blocks, the yellow‑hued Sulfur Cube possesses a mutable skill set. When it absorbs a metal block such as iron, its bounce diminishes, speed drops, and friction rises. Conversely, consuming an ice block grants high velocity, negligible bounce, and minimal drag. These four parameters—speed, bounciness, ground friction, and air drag—create a spectrum of cube archetypes useful for redstone contraptions, mini‑games, and kinetic sculptures.

Availability and gameplay notes

Players can explore Sulfur Caves by installing the latest Java snapshot or Bedrock Preview builds. Contact with the toxic gas emitted from Sulfur pools immediately triggers the Nausea status effect. Although Sulfur Cubes cannot be tamed in the traditional sense, they will follow a player holding a block they are capable of absorbing.

The introduction of this biome enriches underground exploration, adds fresh decorative resources, and opens novel redstone possibilities, ensuring that Minecraft’s subterranean landscape feels both hazardous and creatively inspiring.
