MotoGP Tyre Prices Revealed: How Much They Cost and Who Covers the Bill

How much do MotoGP tyres cost and who pays for them?

Pirelli is set to become the outright tyre supplier for MotoGP and all its junior categories from the 2027 season, bringing a new era of single‑supplier economics after Bridgestone (2009‑2015) and Michelin (2016‑2026).

Reconfiguring the Tyre‑Supply Chain

In most motorsport series, several manufacturers compete for tyre contracts, but only one has remained in MotoGP since 2009. Bridgestone, Michelin, and now Pirelli have each held exclusive rights for the premier class, the latter expanding its reach to Moto2 and Moto3 as well.

Who Ends Up Paying?

The tyre companies ultimately pay the championship promoter for the privilege to supply, not the teams. “The manufacturer pays a fee to the promoter, which in turn covers the cost of the tyres,” explained Pirelli’s motorcycle racing director, Giorgio Barbier. “A typical fee might be around €6 million, while the total cost of producing the tyres can reach €36 million.”

Team Contributions Across Classes

Teams in MotoGP do not purchase tyres from Pirelli, a practice that is only required in Moto2 and Moto3. Barbier noted that Superbike teams handle tyre costs themselves, while MotoGP teams rely on the manufacturer’s supply arrangement.

What Is a MotoGP Tyre Worth?

Although Pirelli is prohibited from marketing MotoGP tyres, the company can reveal that the cost is comparable to its regular racing compounds. For instance, a Diablo Superbike rear tyre sells for roughly €300, and the MotoGP prototypes are produced in the same plant and with similar processes, with only material variations.

Looking Ahead

With a new single supplier and a clear pay‑model, MotoGP’s tyre economics are primed for greater transparency and predictability.
