Naomi Schiff Questions Mercedes on George Russell’s F1 Engine Penalty Decision

Naomi Schiff questions Mercedes' George Russell F1 engine penalty decision

Mercedes’ power‑unit penalty for George Russell at the Singapore Grand Prix could jeopardise his fight to stay competitive on a track that offers little room for recovery.

Sky Sports analyst and former W Series driver Naomi Schiff criticised the timing of the decision on the Up To Speed podcast, writing that “he’s obviously run out of his allocated power units” and that the penalty seems ill‑suited for the weekend’s layout.

Schiff wondered whether a spare engine “that was suitable and already in the allocation” might have been available and suggested that races such as Austin, with its longer straights, could have offered a more favourable environment for Russell to battle back.

Compounding the challenge, the Singapore race will feature a sprint format with only one practice session before Friday’s sprint qualifying, limiting the team’s flexibility to adapt to the penalty.

After Russell’s retirement in Sepang, his teammate Kimi Antonelli holds an 84‑point lead in the drivers’ championship. The Italian driver is currently ahead with 320 points, followed by Russell with 236 and seven‑time champion Lewis Hamilton with 214.
