No One Dares: Why Only One Track Is a Real Option for the 9th DTM Event

"Nobody dares": Why only one track was a serious option for ninth DTM event

Adac’s announcement of a ninth Dutch‑style week in the DTM fell through this season, leaving the schedule unchanged with the same eight venues that returned over the last three years.

Exploring new horizons only to return to familiar circuits

In late winter 2024 Thomas Voss, director of ADAC Motorsport, confirmed that the series would look to race abroad again in 2027, targeting a seventh international venue. Subsequent calendar drafts, however, locked in eight tracks – the circuit line‑up that has delivered the new season’s action.

International outreach stalls due to turnout concerns

Voss outlined that ADAC had actively lured tracks in other countries, emphasising that DTM was keen to “travel wherever” – from Austria’s Red Bull Ring to Italy’s storied circuits. Yet the catch‑all clause was minimal: each venue needed a projected attendance of no less than ten thousand. In most cases, the response grew quiet when confronted with that benchmark.

Only Brno can rally 10 k+ fans

Of the prospects, the Czech Republic’s Brno Circuit remained the sole location confident of exceeding the five‑figure attendance target. Voss noted the track’s proximity to German borders and its DTM heritage dating back to its five appearances between 1988 and 2005. The Czech federation, already partnering on the Central European Rally, was deemed the most receptive, despite internal conflicts that had previously jeopardised cooperation.

Attendance metrics dampen expansion prospects

When speaking with Italian circuits, ADAC received admissions of 2‒2,500 spectators unless the event could count a star such as Valentino Rossi. Voss issued a candid apology for the disclosures and underlined that realistic expectations were essential. The limits set by the venues, compounded by their assessments of traffic and safety, made an expansion costly for the motor‑sport body.

Industry recession and cost‑cutting cool the enthusiasm

Voss pointed to the “crisis” within the German automotive sector that has led to plant closures and layoffs. In an interview from April, he highlighted the uncertainty surrounding production, noting that even Porsche and Lamborghini, two of Volkswagen Group’s flagship marques, still race despite looming plant shutdowns. The tension made other teams uncomfortable with a spreadsheet of increased travel, preparation and incidental expenses associated with an extra weekend.

ADAC’s relations with teams remain secure

Despite the pullback, Voss emphasised that no teams have been pressured or pushed‑back by the board. He said the withdrawal from an extra meeting was measured, not punitive, and that the series would continue to expand when the industry’s economic climate improves. The decision was rationalised by the need to keep the sport financially healthy for all stakeholders.

Looking ahead, the DTM’s calendar will persist with its familiar roster, but the conversation around adding international venues and establishing a ninth weekend will likely resume once world-volume sales and plant production rebound, a sign that the sport’s momentum will eventually outpace today’s temporary resistance.
