Obsidian Entertainment is poised to reboot the Fallout franchise with a fresh title headed by former New Vegas chief Josh Sawyer, according to a Bloomberg report that also confirms the cancellation of Avowed 2 and the studio’s workforce reduction amid recent Xbox layoffs.
Josh Sawyer Returns to the Wasteland
Bloomberg notes that Sawyer, who led Fallout: New Vegas in 2010, will now oversee Obsidian’s upcoming Fallout game. The announcement follows the scrapping of an unnamed RPG project that shared elements with the Fallout universe, a change that signals a shift in Obsidian’s priorities.
The report does not disclose the setting or storyline, yet Sawyer’s return is seen as a positive sign for fans familiar with the New Vegas atmosphere and its enduring legacy.
Avowed 2 and a Staggering Workforce Drop
In parallel, the studio’s planned sequel to Avowed has been officially cancelled. Project leaders expected a title reveal within the next year, but restructuring from Xbox now reassigns resources primarily to the new Fallout venture.
Previously, roughly a quarter of Obsidian’s staff was let go during the recent Xbox layoffs, a move that underscores the company’s pivot toward titles with higher commercial potential.
Future Projects and Industry Impact
Despite these shifts, Obsidian intends to maintain momentum on existing IPs, including The Outer Worlds 2 and Grounded 2. Microsoft and the studio have yet to issue a formal statement, leaving the full extent of the changes open to further alteration.
Observers note that while the new Fallout undertaking brings renewed hope, the transition reflects broader industry trends where studios consolidate on flagship franchises amid corporate restructuring.
