Esteban Ocon is slated to race from 17th after he finished 18th–fastest in Q1, a result that marks his fifth failure to progress in the past six Formula 1 events.
Belgian Grand Prix qualifying – a repeat disappointment
In the Belgium test, Ocon could not overcome the same obstacles that have lingered since his debut with Manor nearly a decade ago. His teammate Oliver Bearman edged him out with a speed gap that put Bearman 16th in Q1 and into 15th on the grid.
Technical setbacks revealed by the driver
Ocon explained that the VF‑26 has been hampered by a persistent top‑speed deficiency, causing the car to lose over five tenths on straights. He added that a rear‑downforce shortfall compounds the instability, a problem noted by the team since the start of the weekend.
He noted that the slipstream technique was unlikely to resolve the issue, and that the car’s inability to maintain a clean run has cost him 3–4 km/h versus rivals. Ocon added that there were no tow opportunities for Bearman; the cars share the same side of the pit lane, which is why Berry’s advantage in the session was largely denied.
When asked if he had helped Bearman, Ocon emphatically denied any assistance and confirmed they maintain the same order throughout the weekend.
Despite the frustration, the driver remained composed, telling the press that the team acknowledged the challenges and that nothing beyond the team’s control could have improved the lap times.
