Pato O’Ward has confirmed he will no longer chase Formula 1, opting instead to focus entirely on IndyCar.
Speaking on Conor Daly’s Speed Street podcast, the Arrow McLaren driver emphasized his gratitude for the experience behind F1’s front‑engine cars while expressing that he no longer feels drawn to the role of a reserve driver in the series.
“I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned in the world of Formula 1,” O’Ward said. “But I’m in a different moment in my life now, and I no longer care.” The Mexican cited the growing excitement he finds in IndyCar, stating that the series provides “the best place for more racing.” He added that the driver’s millionaire contract and status as the most recognized name in the American series eliminate both money and fame from his list of priorities.
Looking ahead, O’Ward will remain with Arrow McLaren for 2027 alongside newcomer Scott Dixon and returning teammate Felix Rosenqvist. The 2027 season will be the final year of his current contract with the team headed by Zak Brown, making it a crucial juncture for the Monterrey native.
While many drivers view F1 as a pinnacle of prestige, O’Ward has illustrated a clear preference for the competition and immediacy of IndyCar. He has also stated that he “has kindly asked to be dismissed from all my services in Formula 1,” reflecting a definitive shift in his professional focus.
With the 2027 season approaching, O’Ward’s statement provides a transparent roadmap for his career, underscoring IndyCar as both his passion and his strategic platform for continued success.
