Cadillac’s stalled development has left its driver, Sergio Perez, labeling the last few Formula 1 meetings as a disappointment, he said on the Beyond the Grid podcast.
Cadillac’s Development Stall
At the season’s outset, the new team pushed its car hard, passing the underperforming Aston Martin team and securing higher grid positions. The progress, however, froze as the competition tightened. Aston Martin added aerodynamic upgrades in Hungary and the Netherlands, and Honda’s powertrain effort gained a lap‑time advantage, pushing Cadillac further back.
“We haven’t been developing and we haven’t been improving,” Perez told listeners, echoing a general sense of frustration. “We’re a new team and improving should be a constant. The last races showed a clear stalling.”
In lap‑time terms, the car appears to be falling one second short of the growth expectations set for the first half of the campaign. “We were hoping for two seconds of gain; we’re seeing closer to nine tenths,” he added.
Impact on Performance
While still trailing the main groups, a small gain of half to one second could alter the dynamics at the back of the grid, potentially urging Williams, Haas, and Aston Martin to reconsider their setups. The team is bypassing the wooden spoon but struggles with consistency against better‑studied rivals.
“If we can improve load, ride, or other key sub‑systems, the difference becomes critical,” Perez said. “A second is life‑changing at this point.”
Practically, the stalemate is blamed on a mixture of learning curves, resource allocation, and integration of new engineering processes. Perez stressed that the team’s digital and mechanical work must tighten up to restore the expected momentum.
Prospects for 2026
Looking forward, Cadillac hints that the missing gap will be closed by the 2026 season. “There’s plenty of upside for us to capture another room of the garage from the established force teams,” he said.
With development stalls identified and debated, the next seasons will test whether Cadillac can transform incremental improvements into competitive advantage.
