Pirelli Takes the Wheel: A 2027 Break‑Even
Pol Espargaro, pulling the throttle for KTM’s 850cc prototype, warned that the MotoGP class is “not aware of the change that is coming.” The switch will see Pirelli tyres, first tested in World Superbike, now entering the premier class.
Three decades after Michelin entered the scene in 2016, the new rubber feels “very different,” Espargaro noted, recalling his experience moving from Bridgestone to Michelin and now to Pirelli. The change is described as “wild” and “much bigger” than previous supplier swaps.

Top 60‑mile driver Mehdi Razgatlioglu has compared Pirelli’s compound to the Michelin tyres he used in Moto2 and reported discomfort riding the older rubber. Espargaro said that riders who lacked Pirelli experience in testing are likely to suffer a performance hit.
In 2024, Moto2’s tyre switch from Dunlop to Pirelli saw some riders unexpectedly climb the leaderboard while established leaders fell away, a pattern Espargaro predicts will repeat in MotoGP.
Competitive Shifts: Who Benefits from the Change?
Ducati is already positioned as “very fast” thanks to its experience in the slightly larger Superbikes class; manufacturers with a Superbikes heritage could have an edge. Espargaro added that young talents from Moto2 – such as Nicolo Bulega – and Superbikes riders could start a season stronger than the current MotoGP core.
The revamped tyre could leave bikes “slower, but not less accelerated” according to Espargaro, meaning lap times may stay comparable despite lower top speed. He expects the category to become more even once manufacturers adjust, potentially yielding a “fun and less dangerous” field.
Limited Test Slots: A Tight Window for Current MotoGP Riders
Season‑long testing is restricted to two official sessions and a single December run in Valencia. Riders who switch teams, like Fabio Quartararo and Jorge Martin, will not hit the new rubber until 1 December, possibly limiting the usefulness of the feast for elite competitors.
Espargaro stated, “MotoGP riders are going to have very little time, while Moto2 and SBK riders are arriving already knowing the tyres very well.” This scheduling differential may shorten the competitive advantage of Pirelli‑familiar minds.
