Red Bull Sees Verstappen’s Anger After “Super Dangerous” British GP Retirement

Red Bull understands Max Verstappen's anger after "super dangerous" British GP retirement

Max Verstappen was furious after his Red Bull spun into the gravel trap at Stowe corner in the final six laps of the British Grand Prix.

Technical Problems Persist

The driver had been jostling for third against George Russell of Mercedes, yet for the whole weekend he struggled with uneven balance, erratic electrical deployment and a gearbox that slipped at key moments. The spin occurred when the car lost downforce and traction on the high‑speed bend after the driver’s calculations had already been tested by the bike’s handling.

Rear‑wing Issues Fuel Speculation

Red Bull’s rear wing has drawn media attention again since Verstappen’s failure in Austria last week. The accident there was linked to a delayed disengagement of the delayed‑deployment mode, or Straight‑Line Mode (SLM). When the aircraft‑style flaps were shed, the air no longer re‑attached quickly, causing a flash of instability that made the car lean into the corner and ultimately spin.

To reduce electrical load on the power unit, the team introduced an active‑aero system this season, allowing the front and rear wing flaps to adjust to the SLM zones. Although this gives a debt‑saver advantage, the aerodynamics do not instantly re‑form, creating a brief period of force loss that can manifest as a loss of tyre load.

The “Macarena wing” was unveiled at Miami. Unlike the usual flat‑trim adjustment, the entire top plane pivots around 180 degrees. While the concept should boost aero efficiency, the rotation’s complexity and the altered airflow path present a challenging engineering problem that the team still seeks to perfect.

Team Statements and Pit‑Lane Decision

Laurent Mekies, Red Bull’s team principal, said the licence in the gravel was “very unpleasant” for the crew. He highlighted that the balance issues were already known after qualifying and that the team would review every detail to avoid repeated failures.

When asked whether the car’s issues warranted an engine change, Mekies explained that an engine replacement would force a pit‑lane start, putting Verstappen outside of the race that morning. “We felt the car’s balance, even if not perfect, would still allow better results than starting from the pit‑lane with a new engine,” he added. “If we had gone through the extra pit, we might not even have contested the top‑three markers.”

Max’s Stand and Future Expectations

“I wanted to start from the pit‑lane,” Verstappen said, describing his frustration at the team’s confidence that the engine could be fixed without a pit stop. He voiced that the failure was the same as the previous race: the rear wing fell off the car’s equilibrium, leaving too little downforce and causing a rapid exit into the gravel. The driver and the crew agreed that, if pre‑race problems remained unaltered, a pit‑lane restart would have left him outside the podium finish that he was just a few laps away from securing.

Verstappen’s complaints are expected to spur further analysis. The Red Bull team has vowed to address every detail, from active‑aero transitions to the “Macarena” wing’s actuation. The season’s next round will test whether the revisions mitigate the risks that have upset both drivers and strategists.
