Lewis Hamilton clinched his first Ferrari victory at Barcelona, propelling the Scuderia to a winning moment eight months after he re‑signed.
Finishing second in the championship after already securing three podiums this season, Hamilton’s triumph signals a dramatic turnaround for the 41‑year‑old.
Hamilton’s Barcelona Triumph
The 2025 season has seen Hamilton matching the rhythm of the updated V6 hybrid‑power plants that were introduced alongside the 2022 regulation overhaul.
After three top‑three finishes, the British star’s decisive victory in Spain demonstrates the synergy between driver confidence and the new chassis dynamics.
His teammate, Charles Leclerc, now trails a 40‑point gap, while Hamilton occupies the runner‑up spot in the standings.
Sainz’s Insight on Car Suitability
Former Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz characterised the season’s shift as a lesson in how a car’s characteristics can either unbalance or unlock a driver’s potential.
Speaking to Spanish media, Sainz highlighted that the 2022 car’s characteristics were mismatched to his style, leading to a struggle in early races despite a fast chassis.
He explained that “adapting the car to a driver’s natural rhythm is the true virtue of a racer” and that once he found that harmony, results improved dramatically.
Sainz further noted that the 2025 regulation changes have allowed Hamilton to exploit the new car’s strengths, suggesting that had the specifications stayed the same, his season might have been less impressive.
Regulation Shifts and Championship Dynamics
From 2021 to 2024, Sainz finished ahead of Leclerc once, in his debut Ferrari year when he outscored the Monegasque by 5.5 points.
Following the 2022 overhaul, Sainz placed fifth with a single win, whereas Leclerc achieved second place with three victories.
In 2023 he slipped to seventh, only six points behind Leclerc, and ended 2024 in fifth, 66 points shy of the 2024 champion Leclerc.
Now, with Hamilton’s recent win, Ferrari’s balance has shifted: Hamilton tops the podium stack, Leclerc rounds out the top five, and Sainz has already moved past his former teammate in season standings.
