Williams Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz has confirmed he will stay with the team through the 2026 season, but he added that he will postpone any future decision until after the summer break.
Mental focus amid a lean season
Since joining the Grove outfit for 2025, Sainz collected points in 20 races and recorded podium finishes in Baku and Qatar. The 2026 contract deadline has put the Spaniard under pressure, yet he told reporters that his priority is “to do the work here” and is not scouting rival seats at this stage.
He and team boss James Vowles have been going “deep into the root of the causes” behind the car’s lack of competitiveness. Sainz said the team plans to carry out a medium‑sized upgrade for the British Grand Prix and will continue to build on that for Spa, Budapest, and Zandvoort. “Almost an entirely new car” will be ready for Baku in September, according to Vowles.

Recent updates aim to reduce the FW48’s weight and unlock hidden performance elements. The simulation work and extensive meetings over the last few months are meant to accelerate the recovery from the tender of an under‑balanced machine.
“We’re trying to understand where things started to go wrong and how quick the changes will start paying off,” Sainz said, stressing the need for “aggressive” adjustments. He said his experience and judgement are directed at identifying the most efficient break‑away points.
Market dynamics if a move materialises
Should Sainz elect to leave Williams, the driver’s next option could involve the most senior talent still on a top‑tier contract: Max Verstappen or Fernando Alonso. A vacancy at Red Bull would create demand for a proven teammate capable of supporting Verstappen’s championship push.
At 44, Alonso has mentioned retirement talks, opening a vacancy that could see Sainz delivered to Aston Martin. In that case, the Spanish drive would transition from a long‑term project to the next big challenge.
