Carlos Sainz addressed Williams staff with a motivational call after the team struggled into the 2026 season.
Williams Faces an Unfavourable Start
After securing two podium runs with the Grove outfit in 2025, Williams expected a stronger entry to 2026. However, the pre‑season Bahrain tests revealed an overweight chassis, and private sessions in Barcelona were missed, leaving the squad behind rivals from the outset.
Despite the setbacks, the team secured contract extensions for both Alex Albon and Sainz, signalling confidence in the drivers amid development challenges.
Sainz’s Call to the Factory
On the Williams Team Torque podcast, episode spotlighted by Albon and chief engineer James Vowles, Sainz outlined a recent dialogue he held with the factory floor.
“A Formula 1 team is a collection of people who excel at what they do, yet they must also withstand adversity, just as Alex noted when he spoke of resilience built through tough trials,” Sainz said.
He urged everyone to “take it personal” when the car performs below aspirations, emphasising that personal accountability can amplify confidence by a factor of ten. “After the hardship comes a sharper, more capable version of ourselves,” he added, framing the struggle as a catalyst for growth.
Focus on Mental Toughness
Albon highlighted similar themes during the episode, stressing that resilience is the cornerstone of F1 performance. Vowles echoed the sentiment, underlining the importance of a united mindset in overcoming development hurdles and maintaining morale.
With the car still evolving under the 2026 regulations, Williams is channeling the collective drive and mental fortitude championed by its drivers and leadership as it steers toward a brighter competitive chapter.
