Sho Tsuboi, crowned Super Formula champion by the end of 2024, is set to depart the series to join FIA Formula 2.
Tsuboi’s Toyota‑Haas Nexus
Standing behind the Japanese marque, Toyota’s TOM’S supplied the machinery that powered Tsuboi’s title win, creating an early link between the domestic series and international opportunities.
Haas F1’s Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) program, in which Tsuboi has appeared three times this year, laid groundwork for a future 2027 F2 seat that could align with a deeper Haas role.
During a Jerez session, he shared the track with Haas reserves Ryo Hirakawa and Jack Doohan, adding a fifth TPC outing since his maiden appearance at Fuji last July.
Toyota vice‑chairman Kazuki Nakajima said the company’s support hinges on a driver’s own objectives and noted that Tsuboi’s Haas duties “may have had a positive impact on his future plans.”
Competing Climbs: Miyata and O’Sullivan
Ritomo Miyata, teammate to Colton Herta at Hitech, secured his first Formula 2 win at Madrig and appears unlikely to stay for another season, opening the door to a return to TOM’S in Super Formula and Super GT.
Zak O’Sullivan, formerly a Williams reserve, will leave Super Formula after the 2026 season to compete with Envision Racing’s new Formula E team, joining compatriot Maximilian Gunther for 2026/27.
Scheduling Tightens for O’Sullivan
O’Sullivan faces a potential conflict between Formula E’s pre‑season test in Jarama (16–20 November) and the Super Formula finale at Suzuka (20–22 November).
In order to attend the Suzuka finish, he would need to exit Spain by 19 November, but the detailed Jarama calendar remains undisclosed.
Path Forward for Tsuboi
With his Super Formula title and a clear technical partnership in place, Tsuboi’s 2027 move to FIA Formula 2 appears poised to dovetail with an expanded Haas position.
“As it is up to him, if he wants to challenge things on an international level, there are opportunities, including with Haas,” Nakajima added, underlining the openness of Toyota’s backing.
By 2027, a switch to FIA Formula 2 would position Tsuboi in a prime feeder series for Formula 1, aligning his ambition with Tsūm’s and Haas’s shared objectives.
