Shane van Gisbergen’s impressive performance at the 67th Coca-Cola 600, where he led for 11 laps and scored stage points, was overshadowed by a chaotic finish that saw him drop to 11th place.
Despite the disappointing end result, Van Gisbergen’s run was his strongest oval race yet, with the No. 97 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet staying inside the top five for a significant portion of the race.
Van Gisbergen’s Oval Performance
Van Gisbergen’s best Cup finish on an oval came at Atlanta earlier this year, where he placed sixth, and he has one other top ten finish, P10 at Kansas last fall.
At Charlotte, Van Gisbergen started third due to qualifying being rained out and remained competitive throughout the race, scoring stage points and leading late.
Stage Points and Leading Laps
At the end of Stage 1, Van Gisbergen was 10th, at the end of Stage 2 he was 9th, and at the end of Stage 3 he was 7th, earning five extra points for his efforts.
Van Gisbergen made some big moves to challenge for a spot inside the top five in the final stage, staying out on older tires and holding the lead for 11 laps with rain threatening.
Chaotic Finish and Post-Race Thoughts
Ultimately, Van Gisbergen finished 11th through some chaotic restarts and a sluggish pit stop, but it was enough for him to jump two positions in the standings and move off the Chase bubble.
Van Gisbergen was thrilled with the run but admitted to being “pissed” that he missed out on a top ten finish, given the amount of time he spent near the front of the field.
Despite the disappointment, Van Gisbergen described the night as “fun,” particularly when he got to rip the top and make gains as the tires began to wear on longer runs.

With his strongest oval race yet under his belt, Van Gisbergen will look to build on this momentum and secure a top ten finish in his next outing, as the NASCAR season continues to heat up.
