Williams on F1 driver market: Alex and Carlos eager to join the team

Williams on F1 driver market: ‘Speak to Alex, speak to Carlos, they want to be here’

Williams F1 team principal James Vowles confirmed that both Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz are keen to remain part of the British outfit’s ongoing revival.

Redefining the Williams identity

Vowles stressed to the board that the organisation must distance itself from the “Williams of old”, a period he characterised by a difficult winter and stagnant performance. He argued that demonstrable upgrades and rapid development are now central to the squad’s agenda, showcasing a capacity to climb the constructors’ ladder.

Accelerated recruitment from rival factories

Following a sluggish start to the season, Williams acted swiftly, securing several senior figures from McLaren, Mercedes and Alpine. Among the new arrivals, former McLaren chief operating officer Piers Thynne is expected to overhaul production processes and operational efficiency.

Academy talent and a possible F2 infusion

The Grove‑based academy currently nurtures eight prospects, highlighted by British F4 and GB3 champion Luke Browning, who now competes in Super Formula. Additionally, Dutch F2 contender Laurens van Hoepen completed his inaugural Williams test at the Hungaroring, prompting Vowles to label the youngster “very possibly” a future academy candidate.

Drivers back the reconstruction plan

Both Albon and Sainz have reiterated their desire to contribute to the project, with Vowles noting that their focus extends beyond merely reaching Q3; they seek assurance that the team’s facilities can resolve technical setbacks promptly. Sainz praised the recent hires, highlighting Thynne’s familiarity from their McLaren days and describing the moves as essential to reversing the team’s fortunes.

Forward trajectory for the Grove crew

While Vowles admits further work remains, the combination of fresh leadership, a revitalised academy, and driver endorsement suggests Williams is positioning itself for a swift ascent up the grid, with the next race weekend poised to test the efficacy of these changes.
