Xbox has launched its long‑awaited disc‑to‑digital conversion tool at the Gamescom launch, allowing players to instantaneously digitise physical titles.
Xbox Disc‑to‑Digital Streamlined at Gamescom
During the first day of the Xbox@Gamescom broadcast, the company announced that the new feature will begin exclusive testing for Xbox Insiders on August 31, 2026. The service is currently limited to Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles equipped with a disc drive.
“Your physical game library is more than a collection of discs. It holds years of memories and stories worth preserving,” CEO Asha Sharma told the livestream, underscoring Microsoft’s commitment to game preservation.
How the Conversion Process Works
Players simply insert a supported Xbox disc into the console, then select the “claim digital entitlement” option. The resulting digital copy grants all the same features as the physical edition, including Xbox Play Anywhere, Xbox Cloud Gaming and, if console‑sharing is enabled, seamless access for all family members.
Once the title has been converted, the disc is no longer required to play that edition; the physical disc remains valid as a separate digital license. If a user sells the disc, the digital entitlement transfers to the new owner automatically.
Impact on Players and Future Titles
At launch, the program covers 1,000 different games, with CEO Sharma announcing plans to expand the catalog. The specific list of supported titles is yet to be revealed, though Microsoft hints that future releases such as the rumored Xbox Helix may sport disc drives to keep the dual‑library model viable.
Xbox’s move contrasts sharply with Sony’s recent decision to cease production of physical game discs, signalling a deeper industry shift toward digital formats while still valuing legacy collections.
By providing a straightforward path from physical to digital, Microsoft aims to ease the transition for users who maintain both disc and digital libraries, reinforcing its dedication to players’ long‑term game preservation.
