Chase Elliott scooter ride became a headline after the Cup Series star hopped on a motorized scooter to travel to Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, sparking an unexpected battery crisis.
Novice Transport in the Gulf Coast
During a Saturday morning sortie, Elliott grabbed a rental scooter with former Cook County, Rochester, New York, pep rally neighbor Ryan Blaney, who had just finished a Cup race on track. Katelyn Larson, the racing journalist who tracks Elliott’s schedule, filmed the moment in front of the navy base’s courtyard, commenting that Blaney offered the ride to skip a two‑mile walk between neighboring hotel rooms.
Blaney later described the ride as “Harry and Lloyd” style, jokingly comparing their tandem motion to the classic comedy film. He noted that the scooter’s battery only had enough charge for seven miles, yet the duo covered a total of three and a half miles on the track’s asphalt after leaving the base, pushing the electric motor beyond its weight limit and showing signs of overheating.
Battery Overload and Weight Limits
According to Blaney, the scooter’s maximum payload is about 220 pounds. With both drivers in the scooter, the load exceeded that threshold, sparking a warning of potential damage to the battery and motor. “It overheated a little bit,” Blaney admitted, acknowledging the scooter’s runtime was strained by the additional weight.
Elliott later laughed that he had not planned to be perched on a rental scooter when he left his house that week. He praised Blaney for the quick replacement, noting a second scooter was already available, allowing the drivers to avoid a repeat of the ordeal.
Backup Plan and Future Transport
Blaney’s quick deployment of the alternate scooter minimized downtime for the two Cup contenders, ensuring they could proceed to evening events without being stranded. The incident highlights how even small logistical missteps can challenge the efficiency of racing crews, yet the swift resolution kept the escape from turning into a larger setback for the weekend schedule.
