Despite a Three‑Tenths Loss, Lando Norris Shockingly Secures F1 Pole at Madrig

Lando Norris lost “three tenths” on way to shock Madring F1 pole

McLaren’s Lando Norris took pole at the Spanish Grand Prix, edging Kimi Antonelli by 0.011 seconds.

Weekend performance context

Mercedes dominated all practice sessions, leaving McLaren a couple of tenths adrift of the front‑row runners. In Q1 and Q2 the Silver‑Arrows were even locking competitive runs with Red Bull, while McLaren struggled to match the pace.

Explosive Q3 improvement

On his first Q3 lap Norris sat sixth; he was 0.446 seconds behind Lewis Hamilton. A second attempt saw him shave almost 0.7 seconds off, showing the lap time he needed to leap ahead of Antonelli.

Wrapping the lap with a mistake

After feeling “the rear edge drifted “he told engineer Will Joseph, “Sorry, I fucked up man.” Johnson advised waiting for the field, which prompted Norris to reply, “Fucking idiot.” The car yielded a perfect run into Turn 1, but he oversteered on the last corner.

Engineer’s perspective

Joseph offered his words: “It wasn’t your best final corner, but it’s still pole, so well done.” He told Norris “You can still be proud of the performance,” even while the driver was convinced it was a joke.

Stella’s assessment of the lap

Andrea Stella hailed it as “one of the most impressive laps I’ve witnessed”. He noted that the 0.011‑second advantage came after the lap lost three‑and‑a‑half tenths in the final quarter, suggesting the tyre wear had a large impact.

Telemetry and tyre wear

The Italian said the precision in braking and kerb striking “was unique” and that this mastery of the metre‑by‑metre execution was key. “Lando slipped on the final corner because the tyres were tired and he didn’t account for the loss of grip,” Stella explained. “He over‑applied the same drive line that he had used earlier, and lost the racing line by over a third of a second.

Other drivers’ positions

Oscar Piastri qualified seventh, 0.470 seconds behind his teammate. Stella emphasized that the car was “not performing at the level of the best” throughout the weekend, citing issues in the first sector and low‑speed corners.

Looking ahead

With the lap’s unprecedented precision and a pole position secured under less than ideal conditions, McLaren can now examine how to translate that single‑class performance into race fuel dynamics and tyre strategy for the coming weeks.
