DTM Sachsenring Round 1: Wittmann Claims Victory, Keeps Championship Fight Alive

DTM Sachsenring Race 1: Wittmann wins to keep title hopes alive

Marco Wittmann claimed his second win of the 2026 DTM season at the Sachsenring, narrowing the championship deficit to just 14 points.

Wittmann’s Dominant Sprint at Sachsenring

Pole‑sitter Wittmann held onto the front during the opening lap. A tight crawl around the tunnel and Mercedes‑driver Jules Gounon was unable to force a passing move, keeping the BMW driver ahead.

Despite a brief stint from Gounon in the lead after a pit‑stop on lap 16, Wittmann leveraged a minor lock‑up at the first corner to slingshot back to the front. The battle finished with the BMW driver ahead by less than a half‑second.

Strategy and Pit Stops Shake the Pack

Wittmann went in for his stop on lap 16, while Gounon stayed out an extra lap, briefly tipping the balance of power. The advantage lasted only a little over two laps before Wittmann reclaimed the lead.

Kelvin van der Linde remained in third throughout, maintaining a sizeable gap ahead of Thomas Preining. After Preining’s stop, the Manthey Porsche closed quickly on the duo, but the top three remained tightly bunched.

Midfield Dynamics and Incidents

At the restart, a safety‑car period erupted as Bastian Buus stalled in the gravel and collided with several rivals, including Marco Mapelli, Luca Engstler and Timo Glock. The stewards allowed Buus to continue after deeming him not at fault.

Engstler and Mapelli had to retire the cars, blaming contact and spinning for their exit. Auer, after starting from the back because of a qualifying run‑over, survived the chaos to finish 11th after a tire change near the end of the race.

Championship Battle Tightens

Preining’s third‑place finish moved him further ahead in the standings, keeping the overall lead with a six‑point cushion over Engel. Wittmann’s victory reduced the gap to 14 points, while Thiim fell to 30 points behind the leaders.

Simone Primm earned 15th position in his DTM debut for the Seyffarth Audi, demonstrating the depth of drivers in the field. With the midseason races behind, the championship title race is now sharper than ever.

Looking Ahead to the Next Race

The second DTM race at the Sachsenring is scheduled for Sunday, with qualifying set to determine the starting grid for the weekend’s final two events. Teams will be eager to tighten strategy gaps after the Sunday sprint demonstrated the importance of pit timing and race‑craft.
