Former Ferrari race engineer Rob Smedley has warned that, to credibly challenge Mercedes for the 2026 drivers’ championship, the Scuderia may have to prioritize Lewis Hamilton over Charles Leclerc in its development agenda.
Championship standings after Silverstone
Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers’ standings with 179 points. His teammate George Russell sits in second place on 154 points, while Hamilton holds third on 147. Leclerc, who secured his first Grand‑Prix victory since 2024 at the British Grand Prix, now trails at 108 points, a 71‑point gap from the series leader.
Strategic options for Ferrari
In a post‑race interview on the High Performance Racing podcast, Smedley argued that an intra‑team battle would undermine Ferrari’s ability to overtake Mercedes in car performance. He suggested that a drastic measure—such as swapping the cars on track during the British Grand Prix—might be the only viable strategy to keep Hamilton in the title conversation. Smedley acknowledged that this approach defies conventional logic, but he cited the numerous variables at play and the team’s limited options for winning the drivers’ championship.
With Hamilton still well within striking distance of Antonelli, Ferrari’s forthcoming decisions will determine whether the Scuderia remains in the hunt for the 2026 title.
