Ashamed of the early promise, 18‑year‑old Ugo Ugochukwu tacked the 2026 Formula 3 title in his own, finishing six stages of races without the flash that accompanies a sprint‑winning season. By Sunday’s closing laps, the Campos Racing sensation had tipped the point scale in his favour, etching his name into the championship leaderboard.
Season Overview
Through the first eight rounds, Ugochukwu accumulated five podiums, while his rival Freddie Slater from Trident took six top‑three finishes. When the race calendar paused for a summer break, the UK star held a slim 15‑point lead over the 19‑year‑old American, both of whom had yet to score at the cancelled Bahrain event.
Monza Round Deflates Title Chances
At Monza, Slater opened with a strong sprint finish but fell back once it was discovered that his tyre side‑car had committed a technical breach. A pole‑position debut in the feature race was squandered when a mid‑garage failure forced his retirement, knocking his chances of a title‑clinching weekend to the wayside.
Madring Group Forces Final Bout
The Madring holiday event rearranged the calendar to feature three races after the void at Bahrain. Slater’s qualifying dropped him to 17th and 8th, while Ugochukwu put in a straight‑edge eight and second. Those numbers meant the only way Slater could crystalise the crown was by out‑scoring Ugochukwu by more than five points in the feature races.
Third Race and Tipping Point
During the Friday sprint, Ugochukwu finished eighth, and the debutant U.S. off his seat was third with a clean score. In the first feature race Ugochukwu claimed fourth and stayed in the lead for the final stretch, outclassing Tuukka Taponen before vacating the race without an incident. Slater’s conversion of an eighth‑place finish into valuable points was insufficient to compensate for the earlier loss.
Champion Speech and Team Recognition
“It feels really good. The work we put in throughout the entire season finally paid off,” Ugochukwu said, “We worked really well together all year, and finishing off like this is the best possible way.” He thanked Campos Racing for a unified season and for clinching the teams’ title just hours earlier. The 2026 Formula 3 championship seal is a fitting conclusion to a campaign that started with a win over Yevan David in Formula Regional and finished aspiring a golden season.
