Alpine Formula One driver Franco Colapinto has revealed that he lost his wallet, passport, and all of his clothes after a break‑in at his car in Milan, describing it as “the worst day of my life.”
Alpine Driver Suffers Theft in Milan
Colapinto’s story surfaced on Instagram on 6 August, but the Argentine‑descendant further explained the incident in an ESPN interview. While dining at a popular Italian restaurant, he discovered that every item in his vehicle had vanished, including his essential documents.
“I wish they had only stolen the mate,” he joked, referencing a local Argentine drink. “Everything. My wallet, passport. All my clothes. A complete disaster.” The driver noted that his clothes were left inside the car, the venue’s best‑known carbonara still spoiling between the chaos.
Recovery Journey Across 1,200 Kilometers
After filing a police report in Milan, Colapinto returned to Monaco. From there, he received a call from a Roman number announcing that his wallet and documents had been recovered. He reports having driven approximately 1,200 kilometres in a single day to retrieve his belongings, an effort that burned a record amount of gas.
Colapinto expressed uncertainty over the fate of his mate and the famed Messi thermos, which he recalled tasting “amazing.” He added a wry remark, describing the incident as “a total tragedy” and joking about the absurdity of the situation.
Current Season Status
Despite the unsettling event, the Alpine marque’s 23‑year‑old continues to compete at a high level, currently occupying 12th place in the drivers’ championship with 19 points.
Colapinto’s ordeal underscores the unpredictable demands that even top‑tier racing professionals must navigate beyond the grid, balancing high‑pressure competition with personal security challenges.
