Grateful Liam Lawson Anticipates Grueling Red Bull Formula 1 Return

Why 'grateful' Liam Lawson is expecting a 'tough' F1 return at Red Bull

Liam Lawson was handed a last‑minute call to replace Isack Hadjar at the Dutch GP after a wrist injury forced a scramble in the Red Bull Racing camp.

Upon pulling his phone, Lawson received a message from team principal Alan Permane: Hadjar’s wrist had failed, and Lawson would step into his seat for the Zandvoort sprint. The next day, engineer‑turned‑driver Arvid Lindblad was briefed, while Racing Bulls’ Yuki Tsunoda was redirected to fill in for Lawson. The rapid reshuffle left little time for analysis or practice.

“I don’t know. I was told on Tuesday,” Lindblad admitted during the FIA press conference. “It might have been more logical to go with Liam because of the risk profile.”

Lawson’s path to the front row began in 2023, when he made his Formula 1 debut with AlphaTauri after Daniel Ricciardo crashed during practice. That opportunity opened doors, and he earned a full‑time drive alongside Tsunoda in mid‑2024. When Red Bull dropped Sergio Perez at year‑end 2024, Lawson was promoted to Red Bull Racing, only to be relegated after two rounds. The turbulence underscored internal management tensions.

Recent years have seen a cleansing of that environment under Laurent Mekies, yet Lawson now faces the RB22’s unpredictable behaviour, the compressed sprint format, and, possibly, the season’s first entirely wet R‑1 generation weekend.

“Everything’s different at Red Bull,” Lawson said. “For me it’s a unique opportunity to maximise a single weekend. I’ve raced again after my demotion, so I’ll bring that flow into the track.” He reflected on his first Zandvoort round, noting it remains the toughest weekend he has ever endured.

Despite the sudden call, Lawson remains the team’s least risky choice: he has quickened his adaptation to the new power unit’s demands, proving he can handle the new hardware while Tsunoda had yet to experience a 2026‑class car.

“It’s a great chance,” Lawson added. “I’m grateful to be selected for something like this, and I know it will be a challenge, but past experiences will aid us.”
