Honda’s F1 power‑unit struggles have crystallised into a clear performance gap with Aston Martin’s AMR26, revealed during the recent Hungarian grant‑in‑speed campaign.
Performance Deficit Exposed
Shintaro Orihara, Honda’s chief engineer, noted that the gaps became visible only after the mid‑season push. “In January we realised our performance was fluctuating wildly,” he said. “Reliability wasn’t keeping pace, and we had a clear lag behind rivals such as Cadillac.”
Before the summer break, the AMR26 had barely raced, trailing by nearly a second. The first upgrade at the Hungaroring was meant to bridge that split, but the chassis alone could not offset the engine’s deficit.
Reliability and Battery Complications
While refining power output, Honda was forced to dial back gains to maintain reliability. Orihara highlighted battery‑related setbacks that consumed valuable winter testing time. “The battery issues made the development cycle more complex and trimmed track time,” he said.
These complications came on top of the already‑tight winter schedule, leaving the team with insufficient data to correct their 2024 deficit.
Adapting to 2026 Regulations
With 2026’s technical overhaul sweeping multi‑millions of changes, Orihara stressed it was not a single component but the sheer volume of new rules that represents the biggest challenge. MGU‑K power has risen to 350 kW and fuel flow rates have been tightened, demanding a total redesign of the power unit concept.
The removal of the MGU‑H further stressed the team’s ability to manage boost pressure and drivability, elements they had been negotiating since the season’s start.
Power Unit Challenges
Turning to the internal combustion engine, Honda admits they are lagging in outright power. Orihara explained that the 2024 engine had been under‑powered compared to competitor units, which criticised its torque curve and response under boost.
He also cited the difficulties in balancing efficiency locally while preserving a competitive power band as a central technical hurdle.
Zandvoort Upgrade Focus
In response, Honda has pivoted its first permanent upgrade to the Zandvoort circuit. The package is aimed squarely at the combustion engine, featuring revised combustion phasing and turbocharger tweaks to generate hard torque.
Pre‑tests during a Hungaroring filming day gave the team a promising data set, signalling that the upgrade “could be the first step towards reducing the brand’s still significant performance deficit.”
Future Prospects
Although Honda acknowledges that closing the performance gap will require significant time, the driver-facing data collected from Zandvoort’s upgrade shows a measurable step forward. The objective remains to translate improvements into the finale of the current championship, and then into 2026 compatibility.
