IMSA Tightens Rules to Curb Driver Aggression Before VIR Speedfest

IMSA cracks down on escalating driver aggression ahead of VIR

IMSA race control now vows tougher sanctions after nine full‑course yellow flags and a flurry of penalties at Road America.

IMSA’s New Accountability Blueprint

During the chaotic weekend, the series expelled Porsche Penske Motorsport’s Kévin Estre from two races, underscoring how often infractions are now being treated as punitive rather than advisory.

Senior Vice President of Competition Simon Hodgson told reporters that drivers at both Watkins Glen and Road America repeatedly crossed safety lines, even though the rulebook remained intact.

“We want to stress that the regulations aren’t broken; what’s happening is driver behaviour starting to tip over,” Hodgson said, noting that nine cautions at Road America “certainly isn’t what we, or our fans, wanted.”

Race Director Signals a Zero‑Tolerance Policy

Race Director Beaux Barfield declared a decisive shift: “I’m a ‘smoking gun’ type of person. We’ll no longer offer competitors the benefit of the doubt.”

Barfield explained that officials will now rely on hard, clear evidence and may link incidents to enact penalties, allowing a narrower margin for interpretation.

He added that, historically, officials hesitated to penalize without absolute proof, but the current approach will demand that drivers self‑regulate without aggressive intervention.

Driver Behaviour and Late‑Season Pressure

Barfield remarked that the peak of competition “commences at the season’s end” where contracts, deals, and championship standings push drivers toward desperate moves.

Despite this pressure, officials would “step in aggressively” if a driver refuses to police themselves, explaining that the exposure to this behaviour is “not part of what we can accept.”

With the tightening of race‑control policies, IMSA intends that all competitors understand that a culture of reckless driving remains unacceptable, regardless of the stakes involved.
