McLaren puzzled: Dutch GP sprint struggles keep them nowhere near good enough

"Nowhere near good enough" - McLaren puzzled by Dutch GP sprint struggles

Lando Norris admitted that McLaren’s “low‑speed weaknesses” prevented any realistic challenge at Zandvoort, labeling the car “nowhere near good enough” for a victory in the sprint.

New rear‑wing package arrives in the Netherlands

McLaren travelled with a fresh upgrade package, centred on the rear assembly. The new wing and associated aerodynamic tweaks followed the progress made at Hungary and were aimed squarely at the car’s weakest spot: high‑speed stability and tyre preservation.

Friday sprint sprint‑pole up the chain

The upgrade showed early promise; McLaren chased the front row, with George Russell carving a pole and the pair of World‑Champions—Norris and Oscar Piastri—mixed in the second and third slots. The fortnight’s gains seemed to pay off as the vehicles hovered just under a tenth of a second apart.

Saturday’s race – Leclerc forces the hand

During the 24‑lap sprint, Charles Leclerc, the lone front‑runner with softer tyres, out‑maneuvered both Norris and Russell. Despite a tyre composition harder than the rest, Leclerc kept pressure mounting until lap 18, overtaking Norris and forcing the team into defense.

Revealed degradation dilemma

Team principal Andrea Stella called the rear‑tyre wear “a red flag” that must be tackled before the later sessions. “We are losing performance because of rear tyre degradation, plus a low‑speed problem we need to solve,” he told Sky, noting that the car’s high‑speed pace is strong while its slow‑corner performance remains a weakness.

Piastri struggles with consistency

Oscar Piastri also noted the inconsistency, saying he was “surprised” that the car failed to match the pace in the second half of the sprint. He added that, like Norris, the team “didn’t look great” and relied on a collective effort to recover in Saturday’s race.

Looking ahead – a tight weekend

With the Woking worksheets still open, the squad faces a demanding Saturday afternoon qualifying. The team aims to optimise the strange tyre‑degradation balance and tweak the low‑speed mechanical mix to keep the car in the hunt for a podium result.
