IndyCar Title Contender Palou Loses Day in Washington, D.C.

IndyCar championship leader Palou suffers “not a good day” in Washington, D.C.

Alex Palou Falls From Pole to 20th in Washington D.C. IndyCar Race

Alex Palou started the Freedom 250 Grand Prix on pole, only to finish 20th after a drive‑through penalty, a lap‑down pit stop, and a suspension‑damaging spin.

Green‑Flag Flagged by President Trump

The legendary Spanish driver saw the green flag waved by former President Donald Trump as the grid set out in Washington, D.C., yet that front‑row momentum was short‑lived.

Pit‑Lane Rupture and Penalty

On lap 36, during Port Hudson’s first stop, Palou clipped a right‑rear tyre left behind by rookie Mick Schumacher of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, forcing a drive‑through penalty that slid him to the back of the field.

Lap‑Down Service and Minor Suspension Damage

A fitting mishap at the left‑front tyre during his second stop dropped him another lap. Later, a wall contact forced minor suspension damage that proved catastrophic when he spun in Turn 3 on lap 122.

Repair and Finish

After the spin, Palou’s #10 Honda required extensive work in the pit lane. He the pit‑lane twice, finished three laps down, and compiled his third non‑top‑10 top finish of the season.

Palou’s Reaction

“It hurts to have such a bad day, but it’s fine. I aimed for victory,” Palou said. He stressed that scrambling through all the incidents in one race was preferable to spreading them over several races.

Championship Lead Shrinks

Palou’s points advantage over rival Kyle Kirkwood shrank from 133 to 91 as Kirkwood went on to win the race after overtaking the Spaniard in Turn 3. With three races left, the gap remains the tightest of the season.

What’s Next?

Palou must recover quickly to keep the championship fight alive while riding a vulnerability that only Tyler the competition can fix.
