Laurin Heinrich will pilot Porsche Penske Motorsport’s #6 Porsche 963 in the IMSA WeatherTech race at Indianapolis’s road course this week.
Porsche Penske Motorsport Driver Lineup Shake‑Up
Heinrich joins Kevin Estre for the Sept. 20 event after taking the lead among Porsche’s factory roster, sitting 118 points behind champion Jack Aitken in the standings.
He entered the season with PPM’s #7 entry for the first two Michelin Endurance Cup rounds before moving to JDC MotorSports, where he triumphed at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Sea. PPM will slot him into their #6 car, while Nico Mueller fills the vacated #5 seat in the JDC squad.
Strategic Move to Fortify Championship Drive
Porsche LMDh factory director Urs Kuratle said the reshuffle is driven by a championship push, stressing “the best possible chance for Laurin to fight for the IMSA drivers’ title.” He added the decision was challenging but necessary.
Vanthoor’s Temporary Absence Explained
Vanthoor’s exit from the #6 car is attributed to a crash at Road America that eliminated championship hopes, according to a statement posted on social media. “After that incident we have no chance in the championship,” Vanthoor said, adding he will return for the season‑ending Petit Le Mans, where high aspirations loom.
Vanthoor also signed with McLaren’s Hypercar programme for the 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship, a fact not disclosed by Porsche outright.
With Heinrich now front‑seat, Porsche Penske Motorsport positions itself to contest the title, while Vanthoor’s planned comeback may bring fresh momentum to the factory effort in late season battles.
