Minecraft’s forthcoming Winter Update will unveil the Frostbite Zombie, a new hostile undead that prowls the game’s snow‑laden biomes.
Frostbite Zombie Overview
Unlike its slow‑moving cousins, the Frostbite Zombie wields a chilling Freezing effect that drags victims to a frosted doom. It carries a 24‑health pool, equaling 12 hearts, and can arm itself with up to two armor points when spawned wearing gear. Its melee strikes can set players’ movement in a temporary 3‑second freeze, and they are more potent on higher difficulty settings.
Where They Come From
These frosty foes naturally materialise in frozen realms—Ice Caves, Ice Spikes, Snowy Plains, Frozen Ocean, Frozen River, Snowy Slopes, Jagged Peaks, and Legacy Frozen Ocean—only when darkness falls or thunderstorms roll across the sky. The Bedrock preview and experimental worlds already allow them to spawn in these cold corridors.
How They Move and Attack
Frostbite Zombies stride over powdered snow without needing leather boots, a trait that can catch unsuspecting explorers off guard. Their combat repertoire includes:
- Melee Punches. When rushing a player, they inflict 1 HP on Easy, 2 HP on Normal, and 3 HP on Hard difficulty while applying Freezing.
- Ice Ball Projectiles. Some spawn clutching blue Ice Balls that can be thrown like simple ranged weapons. These projectiles deal consistent 1–2 HP damage across all difficulties.
In certain Bedrock versions, baby Frostbite Zombies may take the role of a jockey, mounting chickens or spiders to wreak chaotic havoc.
Turning Points: From Zombie to Frostbite
A regular Zombie becomes a Frostbite after lingering in powder snow for roughly 30 seconds, mirroring how Zombies turn into Drowned when submerged in water. This conversion can occur in any suitable snowy biome, allowing players to encounter the traitorous mob even outside of its native spawn zones.
Loot and Battle Tips
Defeating a Frostbite Zombie rewards rotten flesh in a 0‑to‑2 range, and Ice Balls that appear with a 0‑to‑3 chance. Greater quantities of Ice Balls are possible if the loot table is boosted by the Looting enchantment. Retaining a few Ice Balls is worthwhile, as they enable crafting the Potion of Freezing. When faced with these enemies, a ranged weapon such as a bow or crossbow proves the most effective response, keeping the Freezing status at bay.
