Porsche Penske Execs Expose IMSA Performance Struggles After an Unsettled Season

Porsche Penske leadership speaks out on IMSA performance struggles

Porsche Penske Motorsport’s 2024 season has turned from a dominant sweep of Daytona and Sebring into a struggle under the latest Balance of Performance ruling.

BoP pushes the 963 beyond 1,100 kilograms

After clinching victories at Rolex 24 and Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, the 963 reportedly hit a new historical weight limit of 1,100 kilograms due to IMSA’s BoP changes.

While the Porsche 963 posted all‑time highs early on, the weight increase has stalled the team’s pace; only one podium was recorded at Long Beach, and the #6 and #7 entries have yet to finish on the points finishers for four straight races.

Line‑up reshuffle ahead of Indianapolis

Kevin Estre, who caused a crash with Jack Aitken’s Cadillac at the final restart on Road America’s last lap, now faces a season‑long probation issued by officials.

To reignite title hopes for the 20 September “Battle on the Bricks,” team principal Thomas Laudenbach introduced Laurin Heinrich to the #6 car, partnering Estre. Heinrich, a top‑ranked Porsche driver, previously held the #118‑point deficit to Aitken after Long Beach.

Heineken will return to the #7 car for the Road Atlanta finale, keeping the roster balanced amid the championship’s tight points battle.

Leadership calls for a predictable platforms

Thomas Laudenbach rung a blunt shot at IMSA: “We need a transparent, consistent, and predictable platform.” He further admitted the team’s performance fell below that of last year’s success, yet praised IMSA’s efforts to keep racing competitive.

“There is room for improvement,” he said, reiterating the importance of a constructive dialogue to level the playing field for fans and manufacturers alike.

WEC exit not linked to current frustrations

When queried about parallels between current woes and Porsche Penske Motorsport’s 2023 withdrawal from the FIA WEC, Laudenbach denied any comparison.

He cited dissimilar handling and expressed that IMSA and WEC operate on different premises, disallowing a straightforward equivalence.

Future steering: fighting for sprint races

Jonathan Diuguid singled out the team’s persistent shortfall in single-lap speed, noting the 963 has not taken a pole since Detroit in May 2024.

Despite reliability at Daytona and Sebring, sprint race pace lags, a gap the engineering crew believes can be combated with focused race execution.

As Indianapolis approaches, Porsche Penske Motorsport’s efforts to realign drivers and demand clearer BoP rules underscore a broader challenge for manufacturers navigating evolving performance regulations.
