Fortnite’s newest tactical addition, the Port‑A‑Cover, debuted in Chapter 7 Season 3 and is purchased on the Special‑O‑Matic Vending Machine for free.
What the Port‑A‑Cover Actually Is
Functionally a miniature metal barricade, the Port‑A‑Cover functions like the older Cow Catcher but is tailored for zero‑build play. Players can crouch behind it for a brief shield, and its retractable shutter offers a quick peek or a perch for the Striker sprite, boosting movement speed when hurdling over it.
Unlike most combat items, the Cover does not count against the limited inventory slots. It is stored as a Pocket Item in the utility slot, meaning only one Pocket Item can be active at any time.
Pocket Items: A Quick Overview
Fortnite offers a handful of Pocket Items that sit outside the normal inventory system and do not occupy a slot:
- Pocket Shockwave Grenade – supplied by default at match start.
- Pocket Crash Pad JR
- Pocket Port‑A‑Cover
- Pocket Spicy Ice Cream
Each can be swapped in the utility slot as gameplay demands dictate.
Acquiring and Deploying the Cover
During battle, locate a Special‑O‑Matic Vending Machine anywhere on the map. The Vending Machine can drop the Port‑A‑Cover at no V‑Bucks cost. Once purchased, place it in the utility slot, then tap the placement button to position it on flat ground. A preview outline appears to aid alignment.
After placement, the Cover is immovable and can be used repeatedly, though a short cooldown exists between uses. The Cover can be destroyed if it takes enough damage; it cannot damage existing structures, so careful placement is essential if surrounded by trees or buildings.
Players can open the sleeve at the centre to facilitate quick snipes or create space for a Drivable Reboot Van, if necessary.
Choosing the Port‑A‑Cover over another Pocket Item depends on the player’s style and tactical priorities, and whether an extra line of defence provides a decisive edge.
