Shelf Mushrooms have appeared in the latest Minecraft 26.3 update, attaching themselves to Poplar trunks instead of growing on the ground.
What Are Shelf Mushrooms?
These new mushroom blocks naturally attach to the sides of Poplar trees and fallen logs. They come in two sizes: a small variant that drops a single shroom and a large form that yields two. Unlike conventional mushrooms, they do not need a minimum light level to survive.
Where to Find Them
In the Dappled Forest biome, Poplar trees and their fallen logs are the sole locations where Shelf Mushrooms generate. If a player grows Poplars near a base, mature trunks may spontaneously develop mushrooms upon revealing the full side surface.
Increasing Their Numbers
Bone Meal can accelerate mushroom growth on Poplar wood. Additionally, the Wandering Trader occasionally offers a trade of three Shelf Mushrooms for one Emerald, requiring repeated visits to secure the exchange.
Utility and Recipes
Harvesting is straightforward: use bare hands or any tool; Silk Touch or other enchantments are unnecessary. Shelf Mushrooms function as game‑changing ingredients in two stew recipes. Combine one with another mushroom and a bowl to craft Mushroom Stew, providing a renewable food source. Mix a mushroom, a flower, and a bowl for Suspicious Stew, granting unpredictable potion effects upon consumption.
Additional Functionalities
Beyond cooking, these blocks can attach to any solid block face, making them ideal for decorative construction, whether arranging fantasy woods, medieval villages, or underground style interiors. Jumping on a Shelf Mushroom causes a small bounce, similar to a bed’s mechanics but not a true trampoline. Placing them inside a composter offers up to a 65% chance of achieving Level 1, converting the mushroom into Bone Meal.
With the update’s release, players who have switched to the latest stable version can explore the new “Chaos Cubed” features and even use our recommended seeds to spawn worlds rich with “Sulfur Caves.”
