Crash forces cancelation of Rally Paraguay’s penultimate stage
At stage 21 of Rally Paraguay, Toyota GR Yaris driver Takamoto Katsuta lost control at a rapid left‑right bend, flipped onto two wheels and slammed into a telegraph pole before resting on its side. Co‑driver Aaron Johnston and Katsuta walked away but both were taken to the nearest hospital for precautionary checks, the FIA confirmed.
Red flag sent, stage aborted, competitors proceed on road
The incident triggered a red flag from the clerk of the course; the crew’s ambulance transport followed minutes later. FIA’s statement noted that SS21 would not restart and remaining teams were instructed to treat the section as a road segment. The damage to the GR Yaris was complete, sealing the car’s fate for the event.
Toyota’s response and standings on course
Deputy team principal Juha Kankkunen assured that Katsuta and Johnston were “both OK” but described the crash as “very fast… the rear snapped out, the front hit a small wall, and the car kicked it onto two wheels.” Meanwhile, Sami Pajari keeps a 26.1‑second lead over Hyundai’s Hayden Paddon heading into the final stage, and Adrien Fourmaux has pushed Elfyn Evans to third, 49.4 seconds behind.
