With the current anniversary of PlayStation, which can now look back on a 25-year history, Sony today also receives an entry in the Guinness World Record Book for the most successful console of all time.
Since the launch of PSone in 1994, more than 450 million PlayStation systems have been sold worldwide. Ken Kutaragi, then head of department, and his team had the vision of making video games an entertainment form for everyone and creating a platform that would allow developers unlimited creativity. This approach led to the wide variety of different games that PlayStation is still celebrating today – and to 100,000 units sold on the original PlayStation on the first day in Japan.
