The developers want the game to be accessible to everyone, but the decision is directly up to Ubisoft.
Whether or not Rainbow Six Siege becomes a free-to-play game in the future will be determined by Ubisoft, but the development team looks forward to this happening at some point. At least that has revealed Leroy Athanassoff, creative director of the video game, which in an interview with PC Gamer has made it clear that this idea is popular within the development team.
"It's a company decision," anticipates Athanassoff. “I think that in the development team we want it to happen at a certain moment, because we want it to be accessible to everyone. However, the creative director also points out that there is still work to be done before a decision of that caliber can be made. "You need to have some features ready for a free-to-play game to be good and successful."
One of the problems they face is smurfing (that is, they tell them that they are not major). This practice is not illegal in Rainbow Six Siege at the moment, but in other games it is punished because it contemplates creating a new account to face less skilled users. However, in Ubisoft they intend to prevent this problem from continuing to gain weight.
It will work on PS5 and Xbox Series X from launch
One of the first confirmed games for the new generation is Rainbow Six Siege itself, as Ubisoft has confirmed. The title will not only be compatible with Xbox Series X and PS5, but will also enable cross-play between current and new generation consoles. That way, they will ensure that the community of players does not fragment with the transition to new systems, which will be released in late 2020.
It is not for less, the community that has been created around the video game does not stop growing and already exceeds 50 million users between all platforms, that is, PS4, Xbox One, Google Stadia and PC, as well as PS5 and Xbox X series in the near future.
